Brigus Gold Provides Operations Update Feb 21,2012

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia--()--Brigus Gold Corp. (“Brigus” or the “Company”) (NYSE Amex: BRD; TSX: BRD) reports 2011 gold production statistics, including a review of the fourth quarter, and an update on the status of current operations. Management remains focused on increasing gold production at its Black Fox mine targeting steady state output of 25,000 ounces per quarter by year-end.
“Increasing production at Black Fox is our top priority and we are seeing results”
Operational Improvements:
Improvements continue to be made to mining processes and a number of key personnel changes were made at the Black Fox mine in December 2011 and January 2012. These changes have resulted in measurable improvements in the mine’s performance.
  • A new mine General Manager, with over 30 years’ experience mining structurally controlled ore bodies, began working with Brigus in early December. He is focused on maximizing underground production and minimizing dilution.
  • A new mine geology team, including a Chief Geologist, has been assembled and is making significant progress in improving the geologic model of the underground orebody.
  • A new highly experienced Chief Engineer has been hired and will begin with the Company in early March, at which time the interim chief engineer will focus on the development of the 147 and Contact Zone deposits.
  • Additional skilled miners have been hired to optimize mining from the underground operations.
Underground Mine:
  • Grades from the underground mine have materially increased and continue to improve since the beginning of 2012. The average grade of underground ore mined for the first 45 days of 2012 was 5.79 grams per tonne (gpt) compared to 2.99 gpt for the fourth quarter of 2011 and has averaged 6.70 gpt during the first 15 days of February 2012.
  • High-grade tonnes mined from the underground are trending upwards and are expected to reach 800 tonnes per day (tpd) in the third quarter. The mining team plans to open 30 mining stopes so that there are at least 10 to 12 stopes actively mining in ore at all times.
  • A review of the mining equipment and fleet was undertaken. As a result, the Company sold surplus equipment and purchased appropriately sized equipment including several two and three yard scoops.
Open Pit:
  • High-grade tonnage from the open pit will be maintained at an average of 1,000 to 1,200 tpd. Once high-grade tonnage from the underground has reached daily production rates of 800 tpd, limited amounts of low-grade open pit ore will be required to feed its 2,000 tpd capacity mill. The mill continues to operate well with strong recoveries of 92 to 95% and availability of over 90%.
Safety:
  • The Black Fox Mine has a strong safety record with over a 1,000,000 man-hours without a lost time injury. This is an important milestone and the Company is very proud of this achievement.
Mine administration:
  • Certain administration functions at the mine have been restructured to eliminate redundant positions, streamline processes and maximize utilization of all resources.
  • General and Administration expenses at the mine site have been reduced through workforce reduction, renegotiation of contracts and tighter cost control.
“Increasing production at Black Fox is our top priority and we are seeing results,” said Wade Dawe, President and CEO of Brigus. “A number of improvements have been made at the underground mine to facilitate increased production going forward. The open pit is operating as expected, the mill is performing well and we are confident that on-going drilling will continue to expand the gold resource at the recently discovered 147 and Contact Zones. Ore grades from underground have significantly improved and high-grade tonnage from the underground is increasing.”
2011 Operations:
  • The Black Fox Mine produced 14,457 ounces at an average grade of 2.66 gpt in the fourth quarter of 2011 and 55,756 ounces at an average grade of 2.54 gpt for the full year. Quarterly production met Brigus’ revised guidance but was lower than originally anticipated due to a slower ramp up of underground production and higher than expected dilution in the underground.
  • The average grade of ore from the open pit was 2.03 gpt for the fourth quarter of 2011 and 2.56 gpt for the year. The open pit mine is performing as expected, delivering grades and tonnage as per the mine plan. Grades in the open pit are expected to increase later in 2012 as higher-grade ore is mined deeper in Phase 2 of the pit.
  • The average grade from the underground mine was 2.99 gpt for the fourth quarter of 2011 and 3.82 gpt for the year.
  • Cash cost per ounce was $947 for 2011. This is higher than anticipated due to lower production for the year. As production increases in 2012, cash costs are expected to decrease to approximately $700 by the end of the year
Underground Mining Statistics
Period       Average tpd       Average grade
Q4 2011       589       2.99
January 2012       278       5.36
February 1st to 15th 2012       274       6.70

  • Historically, the Black Fox underground mine produced 211,000 ounces at an average grade of approximately 6.0 gpt over a four-year period from 1997 to 2001. Brigus’ geological modeling underground confirms the quality and grade of the ore body that has a reserve grade of 5.9 gpt as per the NI 43-101 report released January 2011
Looking Ahead:
Brigus is forecasting gold production of 77,000 to 85,000 ounces for 2012 as follows:
2012       Low       High
Q1       15,500       17,000
Q2       18,000       21,000
Q3       21,500       23,000
Q4       22,000       24,000
Total       77,000       85,000

Exploration:
  • Brigus continues to report excellent exploration results at the Black Fox Complex. The Company released its initial NI 43-101 on the Contact and 147 Zone deposits on December 15, 2011 increasing the gold resource on the property by more than 50%. Brigus has an $8.0 million surface exploration budget for 2012. Ongoing exploration is focused on expanding the 147 and Contact Zones as well as converting the inferred resource to the indicated resource category. An updated mineral resource estimate will be released later in 2012.
  • Underground exploration at the Black Fox mine is expected to begin in the second half of 2012. The program is intended to expand the gold deposit along strike and down-dip. The program is designed to offset drill results from the 2004 underground fan drilling program from the last southeast drill station located at the end of the 235 m level exploration drift. This drilling returned significant true width gold results including 31.16 g/t over 6.25m (hole 235-296) and 7.48 g/t over 3.49 m (hole 235-295).
  • The independent 43-101 report on the Company’s Goldfields development project, located in northern Saskatchewan was updated in the fourth quarter of 2011. In October Brigus released a pre-feasibility study for Goldfields that indicated a net present value of approximately $144 million at a 5% discount rate with an internal rate of return of 19.6%. This assumes a gold price of $1,250 per ounce.
  • Brigus remains focused on development activities at the Black Fox Mine and will make a production decision on Goldfields when Black Fox gold production rates are in excess of 25,000 ounces a quarter.
  • Management is pleased with the Company’s progress to improve all facets of operations and is optimistic about 2012 performance.

RODINIA LITHIUM COMMENCES CONSTRUCTION OF PILOT PRODUCTION FACILITY AT DIABLILLOS

  • THREE PHASE PROGRAM TO BE IMPLEMENTED, INCLUDING CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF EVAPORATION PANS, POOLS AND LINED PONDS

  • EVAPORATION PANS AND LARGER POOLS CURRENTLY INSTALLED AND IN OPERATION

  • PILOT PRODUCTION PONDS ARE ANTICIPATED TO BE OVER 25 HECTARES IN SIZE

  • FINAL PILOT PRODUCTION FACILITY WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING UP TO 200 TONNES OF LITHIUM CARBONATE A YEAR
Toronto, Canada, February 15, 2012: Rodinia Lithium Inc. (“Rodinia” or the “Company”) (TSX-V: RM; OTCQX: RDNAF) is pleased to announce that construction and operation of a pilot production facility has commenced on its 100% owned Salar de Diablillos lithium brine project (“Diablillos” or “Salar”) located in Salta Province, Argentina.  The pilot production facility aims to confirm the proposed process described in the recent Preliminary Economic Assessment (“PEA”) dated December 22, 2011 filed on SEDAR and its results will be incorporated into a Feasibility Study.  The facility aims to produce battery grade lithium carbonate on site, reflecting the operating conditions of a potential final production facility, including production of potash and boric acid.
“In conjunction with initiating our first production sized well, Rodinia has initiated work to complete the construction and operation of a pilot production facility that is anticipated to produce boric acid, potash and battery grade lithium carbonate on site,” commented William Randall, President and CEO of Rodinia.  “The three phase program allows us to work out any potential problem areas before we reach that phase in our larger lined pond system, allowing the Company to develop the project more aggressively.  In addition to confirming the processing flow sheet, the pilot production facility will allow us to demonstrate the potentially low production costs estimated in the recent PEA.”
Description of the Pilot Program
Phase I-Evaporation Pans:
Seasonal evaporation rates and the natural phase chemistry of the Diablillos brine are being determined through the use of six standard evaporation pans, each 4 feet in diameter and 25cm tall, buried in the ground near the existing weather station.  Pan A contains fresh water and is used to determine the evaporative potential at Diablillos.  Pans 1, 2 and 3 are filled with the indigenous brine, and refilled in sequence, to concentrate the brine and to measure evaporation rates versus density.  Crystal and residual brine samples from pans 4 and 5 are collected every two days and analyzed to evaluate the evolving natural phase chemistry.  The final concentrated brine will be used to conduct bench testing and process evaluation to maximize the recovery of lithium, the recovery of potassium and boron co-products and to determine the size of production ponds.  Pan A, and pans 1, 2 and 3 have been in place since May 2011;  pans 4 and 5 are recent additions to increase concentrated brine volume for bench tests.
Phase II - Evaporation Pools/Bench Testing
The evaporation pools will provide a large volume of concentrated brine for bench tests.  Ten evaporation pools, each 10 square meters in area, have been installed adjacent to the evaporation pans.  The pools have been filled with brine from a well located in the proposed production field as noted in the PEA.  Bench scale processing of the concentrated bittern from these pools will further define the processing scheme tested in Phase I and refine the economic aspects of the process flow sheet.
Phase III - Pilot Ponds/Pilot Plant
Bench scale process testing will be ramped up to larger pre-production volumes through the construction, filling, evaporation and processing of brine in large pilot evaporation ponds.  The ponds will cover approximately 25 hectares and will be lined.  Initially, brine from the production well will fill the entirety of the pond area.  As evaporation occurs the brine will be concentrated in a larger initial pond as it reaches saturation.   The ponds will then be used in sequence to demonstrate the proposed process to isolate sodium (“Na”), potassium (“K”), and magnesium (“Mg”) salts and produce a concentrated lithium-rich bittern.  The process is also anticipated to harvest sylvinite.  In addition, exploration is underway to define a suitable area of the Salar's surface for an unlined pond, which will have minimal leakage. This pond is anticipated to be the largest of the commercial production ponds and used for the primary evaporation stage.  A pilot plant will be designed and assembled on site. It is intended to process the resultant lithium-rich bittern.
The Project is supervised by Ray Spanjers, Rodinia’s Manager of Exploration.  Mr. Spanjers is considered a qualified person, as defined by National Instrument 43-101, and has reviewed and approved the scientific and technical information in this release.
About Rodinia Lithium Inc.:
Rodinia Lithium Inc. is a Canadian mineral exploration and development company with a primary focus on Lithium exploration and development in North and South America.  The Company is also actively exploring the commercialization of a significant Potash co-product that is expected to be recoverable through the lithium harvesting process.
Rodinia’s Salar de Diablillos lithium-brine project in Salta, Argentina, contains a recoverable resource of 2.82 million tonnes lithium carbonate equivalent and 11.27 million tonnes potassium chloride equivalent.  The project contains a recoverable inferred resource of 952,553,000 m3 grading 556 mg/L lithium and 6,206 mg/L potassium as set out in the Company’s NI 43-101 compliant technical report entited “Salar de Diablillos Project, Salta Province, Argentina, NI 43-101 Technical Report on Brine Resource Estimate” dated May 3, 2011 and filed on SEDAR. Throughout 2012, Rodinia will focus on continuing to develop the Diablillos project by completing additional drilling and advancing through Feasibility Study.
The Company also holds 100% mineral rights to approximately 70,000 acres in Nevada’s lithium-rich Clayton Valley in Esmeralda County, and is currently in the process of assessing the size, quality and processing alternatives of this deposit.  The Clayton Valley project is located in the only known lithium-brine bearing salt lake in North America, and looks to represent the only new source for domestic lithium carbonate supply.
The Projects are supervised by Ray Spanjers, Rodinia’s Manager of Exploration. Mr. Spanjers is considered a Qualified Person, as defined by National Instrument 43‐101.

Talison Lithium Limited today announced results for the second quarter of the 2012 fiscal year(1).
"We were very pleased with our achievements during the second quarter, in particular the decline in cash operating costs, our strong operating cash flow, the move to the next phase in the development of our Minerals Conversion Plant and the 15% price increase achieved from January 1, 2012." Peter Oliver, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director commented. "The delay of some shipments into the third quarter due to unplanned Port shutdowns negatively impacted our financial results for the quarter. However, the results were still pleasing and with the recognition of the delayed sales in the third quarter, our fiscal 2012 expectations have not been affected."

SECOND QUARTER FINANCIAL RESULTS
Talison sold 75,221 tonnes of lithium concentrate (approximately 11,200 tonnes LCE) in the second quarter, representing a 23 per cent decline over the corresponding period of fiscal 2011. Sales of lithium concentrate during the six months ended December 31, 2011 represented a 4 per cent increase over the corresponding period of fiscal 2011.

Sales in the quarter were affected by significant congestion at the Port of Bunbury due to berth closures and unplanned Port shutdowns impacting all Port users. This resulted in approximately 38,000 tonnes of Talison's lithium concentrate sales that were ready at the Port for shipment in early December being delayed into January 2012. These shipments departed early January and will be included in third quarter sales.
Investors are cautioned that sales are made in large shipments that can be irregular in timing and in varying proportions of technical-grade and chemical-grade lithium concentrates. The irregular timing of shipments and varying proportions of technical-grade and chemical-grade lithium concentrates can result in variations in individual quarters between production and sales, the average sales price and average cash operating cost per tonne sold.

Talison generated revenue of A$22.7 million in the quarter, a 31 per cent decline from the second quarter of fiscal 2011 due to a combination of the shipment delay, and a 4 per cent increase in the value of the A$ against the US$ from the second quarter of fiscal 2011.

The Company realized an average sales price per tonne of lithium concentrate of US$310, a 2 per cent decrease over the second quarter of fiscal 2011, due to a lower proportion of higher value technical-grade products sold during the quarter, compared to the same period in fiscal 2011. Underlying technical-grade prices between the two periods increased by an average of 13% in US$ terms.

Production volume increased 7 per cent over the second quarter of fiscal 2011 to 89,015 tonnes of lithium concentrate (approximately 13,200 tonnes LCE).

Cash operating cost of goods sold per tonne of lithium concentrate was A$187, a 10 per cent decline over the second quarter of fiscal 2011 due to the new lithium mineral reserve announced in May 2011 and a 7% increase in the chemical-grade plant yield.

EBITDA(2) was A$5.4 million, reflecting an increase of 169bps in the EBITDA margin to 24 per cent of revenue despite a 4 per cent appreciation in the value of the A$. A constant exchange rate would have resulted in an EBITDA margin of approximately 27 per cent, reflecting the increase in average sales price and reduction in cash operating cost of goods sold during the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER OPERATIONS
During the quarter Talison advanced its growth projects.

Greenbushes Stage 2 Expansion
The Stage 2 Expansion at the Greenbushes Lithium Operations remains on budget and on schedule. During the quarter, foundations for the new chemical-grade plant were completed, installation of steelwork was nearing completion, and the conveyor belt to the finished product stockpile was in construction. Talison continues to expect commissioning of the Stage 2 Expansion during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012.

Minerals Conversion Plant
Responding to growing global demand for an additional secure supply in lithium chemicals, Talison is aggressively pursuing its proposed plant to convert lithium minerals into lithium carbonate ("Minerals Conversion Plant"). The preliminary engineering study in relation to the proposed construction of the conversion plant was completed during the second quarter.

The next phase of the project, which includes an engineering study for a 20,000 tonnes per annum lithium carbonate plant and obtaining the required environmental and regulatory approvals, commenced in early calendar 2012. As recently reported, the Kwinana Industrial Area, located 40km south of Perth in Western Australia has been selected as the location for the plant and Talison is currently finalizing tenure arrangements for its preferred site. Talison anticipates making an investment decision on the project by the end of calendar 2012 and is targeting commissioning during 2015.

Discussions with potential customers are continuing positively. As recently reported, Talison has entered into Memoranda of Understandings (MOU) with Sojitz Corporation and Mitsui & Co. Ltd. The MOUs provide a framework on which to discuss on a non-exclusive basis collaborative marketing and distribution of lithium carbonate produced by Talison to customers in Japan.

Greenbushes Resource Development and Salares 7 Project
Due to the encouraging progress in the development of the Minerals Conversation Plant, Talison is accelerating resource drilling at the Greenbushes Lithium Operations. The Company's objective is that lithium mineral reserves will be increased and the mine life extended to support future additional expansions of the lithium concentrate processing plants and a potential doubling in capacity of the minerals conversion plant. Talison expects to invest approximately A$1.9 million during fiscal 2012 in this resource definition drilling program.

Consequently, Talison is reallocating resources for the balance of fiscal 2012 from the Salares 7 Project. The drilling program at the Salares 7 project will be deferred and the focus will be on the environmental approvals process. This is not expected to affect the overall development timetable for the Salares 7 Project.

FISCAL 2012 OUTLOOK
Talison expects production of lithium concentrate in the third quarter to be in-line with the second quarter of fiscal 2012. Sales of lithium concentrate during the third quarter will include the 38,000 tonnes delayed during the second quarter of fiscal 2012. Sales are expected to materially match production for the nine months ending March 31 2012.

For the full 2012 fiscal year, Talison expects production and sales tonnages to be consistent with the nine months ended March 31, 2012, on an annualized basis.

During the second quarter, Talison negotiated with its customers a 15% price increase across its entire product range. The price increase applies to sales of chemical-grade lithium concentrate in the third and fourth quarter of fiscal 2012 and for technical grade lithium concentrate sales for the full 2012 calendar year.
